In 1997 the Truckee Rotary Club decided to support a long-term comprehensive project that would leave a legacy for future generations of Truckee citizens.  They began searching for projects that would ignite the imagination of the public, draw diverse groups and individuals together in a common effort, and be large enough to provide involvement opportunities to everyone in the area.  Since trails and bikeways along the Truckee River are a top recreational priority, the Rotary Club of Truckee (also called the Noon Rotary Club) selected the enhancement of and access to the Truckee River as the club's “Legacy Project.”

The Legacy Trail is being built as a result of a strong partnership between the Rotary Club of Truckee, Truckee-Donner Parks and Recreation District, Town of Truckee, Truckee Trails Foundation and Truckee River Watershed Council.
